FOSS update

It has been a very busy term for the Friends of Slingsby School. This term we have raised approximately £500 to pay for equipment and activities that will enhance the learning of our children.

We started in January with a Pampered Chef evening hosted by Fiona Farnell. Guests were invited to cook Curry in a Hurry and Chilli-Pecan Camembert. The evening was very successful and we hope everyone is making the most of the stoneware, pans and gadgets they were able to order that night. Thank you to Fiona ( for a fun evening and to everyone that came along and made a purchase.

During February, a night of giggles was had with Adam Collier and his Yorkshire Dialect. A fabulous evening with parents and residents of the village – thank you to those that came along. Nibbles were provided by Whippet Inn, York. Voted Visit York’s Pub of the Year in 2014, Chef Michael used Yorkshire produce to cook up some very tasty food.

Finally, in March, we held our quiz and curry night. Members of F.O.S.S cooked up some very yummy curries with Kevin Magson being our quiz master for the evening. Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Metcalfe and their team members on their win and commiserations to the losing team – you know who you are 😉

All our events were held in Slingsby Village Hall and were open to everyone in the village and beyond. Many thanks to you if you came along and supported us in any way.

The Summer term will be just as busy with our Scarecrow Competition (2nd – 4th May), Bags2School and the annual duck race (20th June). Once again, you are invited to join in, attend and support all of our events.

As mentioned, our scarecrow competition takes place over May Day Bank Holiday Weekend and we would like everyone in the village to get involved. You don’t need to be a fantastic artist/sculptor to join in – you just need a little imagination. We don’t have a theme, we don’t mind what they are made of – we just want you to have fun. Who is your favourite movie/tv/sports star? Can you make them from shoe boxes, newspaper and bin liners? Perfect! Download a copy of the entry form from the school website ( and drop it in with £2 entry fee and be a part of this wonderful weekend. Have a browse through our facebook page for photographs of all previous entries ( The closing date for entries is Friday, 24th April.

Over May Day weekend, please support the Friends of Slingsby School by purchasing a trail (£2 each) from Robin Hood Caravan Park, The Grapes Inn or Tony’s Village Shop. The school Reading Rooms will be open from 12noon – 4pm on Saturday 2nd May and Sunday 3rd May. to sell trails as well as teas, coffees, juices and light snacks. It promises to be an excellent weekend for villagers and guests alike – it would be great to see you there.
